Why We Love Limonada de Coco

If you have ever been to the coastal region of Colombia, you know just how delicious limonada de coco really is. Also known as coconut limeade, this tropical drink is abundant in Cartagena because it is the perfect hot-weather drink!  Think pina colada, but without the pineapple.

I pretty much always have a craving for limonada de coco, so I had to start making it at home! This simple lemonade recipe is easy to make, and perfect for adults and kids alike!

If you're feeling adventurous, add a shot of white rum to the mix!

Be sure to also try my tropical papaya mango smoothie, if you are in need of some tropical refreshments.

What is Limonada de Coco?

Limonada de Coco, aka Colombian coconut limeade, is a traditional Colombian drink from the Caribbean coast. It combines the zesty punch of lime with the rich creaminess of coconut milk, resulting in an absolutely delicious drink. Typically served cold, it's the perfect beverage for hot summer days or any time you want a taste of the tropics!

Ingredients

This Colombian limonada de coco only requires four ingredients! Here's what you'll need:

Ingredients needed to make limonada de coco.
  • Coconut Milk: Use the full fat coconut milk for the creamiest texture!
  • Limes: I used about six small limes. It is up to you how many limes you add, depending on how tart you want your coconut limeade. It is very important to use fresh lime juice for the best flavor!
  • Sugar: You can add sugar to taste, however, about 4 tablespoons is a good place to start.
  • Ice Cubes: Add as much ice as you'd like!

How to Make Limonada de Coco

Ingredients needed to make limonada de coco in a blender before blending.

Step 1: Add the ice, can of coconut milk, lime juice, and sugar into a blender.

Step 2: Blend until smooth. Serve cold and enjoy!

Hint: If you don't have a blender, simply whisk together the ingredients and serve your drink with ice!

Tips For Success

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Freshly squeezed lime juice is key to getting the right balance of flavors. Avoid using bottled lime juice, as it can taste processed and won't lend the same refreshing flavor!
  • Choose Quality Coconut Milk: Opt for full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream (crema de coco) for a rich and creamy texture. If you prefer a lighter version, you can use light or cartoned coconut milk, but the drink will be less creamy, and less coconut-y!
  • Adjust Sweetness: Everyone’s taste buds are different, so feel free to adjust the sugar to your liking. In Colombia, it is common to use condensed milk instead of sugar for an extra special treat!
  • Experiment with Add-Ins: For an extra tropical twist, try adding a splash pineapple juice, or even a handful of fresh berries to the mix!
